Youth For Truth Explores Accountability, Youth Participation, and Gandhian Values in Contemporary India

Theme: The Rise of the Cockroach Janata Party: What Would Gandhi Say?

On 6 June 2026, Youth For Truth, a monthly youth dialogue initiative under the banner of Global Gandhi, hosted an engaging online discussion on the theme “The Rise of the Cockroach Janata Party: What Would Gandhi Say?” The event brought together young citizens, students, activists, and changemakers to discuss accountability in governance, youth participation in democracy, unemployment, paper leaks, corruption, civic engagement, and the relevance of Gandhian values in modern India.

The discussion was guided by Dr. Sudarshan Iyengar, renowned Gandhian economist, social activist, and former Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith. Through a thought-provoking conversation, participants explored how Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of truth, non-violence, transparency, and citizen responsibility can help address contemporary challenges facing India’s youth.

As concerns around government accountability, examination paper leaks, unemployment in India, democratic participation, and public trust in institutions continue to grow, the session provided a meaningful platform for dialogue and reflection.

Setting the Context: Youth Concerns and Democratic Accountability

The session began with a short video presentation highlighting some of the most pressing issues affecting young people today, including:

  • Examination paper leaks
  • Recruitment delays
  • Youth unemployment
  • Corruption and lack of transparency
  • Governance challenges
  • Public accountability

Participants were invited to reflect on a powerful question:

“If Gandhi were here today, what would he say?”

This question became the foundation for a rich discussion on Gandhian philosophy, democratic values, citizen participation, and social responsibility.

At a time when many young people are questioning institutions and demanding greater transparency, the discussion emphasized the importance of constructive engagement and active citizenship.

Dr. Sudarshan Iyengar’s Reflections on Democracy and Gandhian Thought

In his opening remarks, Dr. Sudarshan Iyengar emphasized that a healthy democracy depends not only on elections but also on active citizenship, public participation, and civic responsibility.

Drawing upon Gandhian principles, he spoke about:

  • Truth and ethical leadership
  • Non-violent social change
  • Citizen participation in democracy
  • Accountability in governance
  • Constructive public engagement
  • Community-driven solutions

Dr. Iyengar encouraged young people to transform frustration into meaningful action through peaceful, organized, and sustained efforts. He stressed that government accountability and democratic accountability can only be strengthened when citizens remain informed, vigilant, and actively engaged in public affairs.

According to Dr. Iyengar, Gandhi believed that lasting social transformation emerges when citizens take ownership of public issues and work collectively toward solutions rooted in justice and truth.

Youth Voices Take Center Stage

One of the defining features of Youth For Truth is its commitment to amplifying youth voices and encouraging meaningful dialogue on issues affecting young people across India.

During the session, participants shared their experiences and perspectives on unemployment, governance, public accountability, and democratic participation.

Adarsh Kumar on Paper Leaks and Youth Frustration

Adarsh Kumar spoke about the growing frustration among students and job seekers regarding paper leaks, examination irregularities, recruitment delays, and administrative failures.

Referring to recent youth protests and public demonstrations, he highlighted the urgent need for:

  • Transparent recruitment processes
  • Stronger accountability mechanisms
  • Fair examination systems
  • Responsive governance

His remarks reflected concerns shared by thousands of young people affected by recurring examination controversies across India.

Sujit on Youth Employment and Civic Participation

Sujit discussed the challenges faced by young people in securing employment opportunities and building stable careers.

He highlighted concerns related to:

  • Youth unemployment in India
  • Limited job opportunities
  • Growing disillusionment with political institutions
  • The need for civic awareness

He emphasized that strengthening democracy requires informed citizens who actively participate in public discourse and democratic processes.

Harpreet Singh on Non-Violent Movements and Social Change

Harpreet Singh focused on the importance of organized public movements and citizen-led campaigns.

Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s methods of non-violent resistance, he stressed the need for:

  • Peaceful activism
  • Issue-based campaigns
  • Long-term public engagement
  • Collective action for accountability

He argued that sustainable change requires persistence, organization, and a clear vision rather than short-term reactions to public issues.

Open Dialogue on Governance, Accountability, and Youth Issues

The session featured an interactive discussion where participants exchanged views on several critical issues affecting contemporary India.

Topics included:

  • Examination paper leaks
  • Recruitment delays
  • Youth unemployment
  • Accountability in public institutions
  • Transparency in governance
  • Public trust in democratic systems
  • Social media activism
  • Youth participation in democracy
  • Citizen engagement and public responsibility

Participants acknowledged that while social media plays an important role in raising awareness and mobilizing communities, meaningful change requires action beyond digital platforms.

The discussion repeatedly returned to Gandhi’s belief that organized citizen action, ethical leadership, and constructive social engagement are essential for strengthening democracy.

Key Learnings from the Discussion

Several important themes emerged during the dialogue:

  • Accountability in governance remains a major concern among young citizens.
  • Gandhian values continue to offer practical guidance for addressing contemporary social and political challenges.
  • Youth participation in democracy must be informed, organized, and sustained to create meaningful impact.
  • Active citizenship is essential for strengthening democratic institutions.
  • Transparency, public accountability, and civic engagement are critical for building trust in governance.
  • Non-violent social action and constructive dialogue remain powerful tools for democratic change.

Closing Reflections: Building a Responsible and Engaged Citizenry

Responding to questions from participants, Dr. Sudarshan Iyengar encouraged young people to continue asking critical questions while remaining committed to democratic values and peaceful engagement.

He emphasized that meaningful social transformation requires:

  • Patience
  • Persistence
  • Collective action
  • Ethical leadership
  • Citizen responsibility

The session concluded with remarks from Vishal Shivbhare of Global Gandhi, who highlighted the importance of citizenship, constitutional values, historical awareness, and democratic responsibility.

He encouraged participants to study India’s social movements, understand the principles of democracy, and actively contribute to building a more accountable and inclusive society.

Looking Ahead: Youth For Truth and the Future of Democratic Dialogue

Youth For Truth continues to serve as a platform where young people can engage with pressing social, political, and civic issues through dialogue, reflection, and action.

The June 2026 session demonstrated that while challenges such as paper leaks, unemployment, corruption, governance concerns, and democratic accountability remain significant, meaningful conversations rooted in Gandhian philosophy, civic responsibility, and youth leadership can inspire constructive change.

As participants concluded the discussion, they carried forward an important lesson from Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of democracy:

A strong democracy thrives when citizens remain informed, engaged, accountable, and committed to building a just and responsible society.
